Are you ready to take on a master’s thesis project where your ideas can contribute to well-functioning energy markets and a more sustainable society? 

At Merlin & Metis, we offer strategic advice and services related to market analysis and design to actors across the energy sector - from utilities and investors to large users and authorities.

The energy markets are undergoing major changes to ensure a stable, sustainable, and cost-effective energy supply. These changes require both strategic and operational adjustments from all market participants. We help our clients navigate these challenges and seize new opportunities,  enabling the energy transition.

Thesis project ideas:
We highly encourage you to come up with your own ideas, but here are some general themes we'd like to explore.

1.	Fundamental modelling of a part(s) of the electricity system to improve our modelling and understanding of the full electricity market.
o	Hydro power in Sweden.
o	Flow-based market coupling.
o	Handling of negative pricing in fundamental models.

2.	Realizing local flexibility markets (LFMs)
o	Model and simulate a LFM for a specific Swedish region (e.g., mid-sized city).
o	Evaluate system benefits of LFMs compared to grid expansion.
o	Assess obstacles (economic, technical, administrative, regulatory) for realizing LFMs and evaluating possible solutions.

3.	Dynamic pricing of district heating
o	Develop a dynamic pricing model for a Swedish DH operator.
o	Explore how to modernize and digitalize district heating businesses.
o	Investigate ways to strengthen DH competitiveness in the heating sector.

Who are we looking for?
Curious generalists with a genuine interest in energy markets. Specific expertise (e.g., in financial modelling, optimization, or policy & regulation) is a plus but not required.
We value people who:
•	Thrive in a fast-paced environment (as is the business of consultancy).
•	Have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
•	Take initiative and contribute constructively, lifting others up and sharing both their knowledge and personality 😊.
 Bonus skills:
•	Knowledge of the European/Nordic energy systems and energy markets. 
•	Proficiency in Excel and ability to create compelling storylines in PowerPoint.
•	Basic skills in Python and collaborative development tools (e.g., GitHub).

We aim to take on 1 thesis student or 1 pair of thesis students if the scope allows and you both fit our profile.
