Description: Up to 1 billion people worldwide suffer from various neurological disorders. Muscle fibrosis, typically characterized by increased skeletal muscle stiffness, is one of the major symptoms in these disorders. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is an MRI technique to quantify tissue mechanical properties and has the potential to provide novel quantitative imaging markers to evaluate muscle fibrosis. However, current MRE methods suffer from low image resolution. With the development of advanced diffusion MRI (dMRI) techniques, we can now estimate muscle microstructure, such as muscle fiber diameter, in a non-invasive manner. By integrating muscle microstructural information acquired from dMRI into MRE, we can better understand the mechanism behind muscle fibrosis. The objective of this project is to develop a simulation framework of skeletal muscle MRE, with the consideration of tissue microstructure. Specifically, the student will set up computational models that consider muscle fiber diameter using COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB. Specific tasks: 1. Set up finite element (FEM) model to simulate shear wave propagation in a transversely isotropic material using COMSOL Multiphysics. 2. Implement sub-voxel microstructural features, such as muscle fiber diameter, in the model described in task 1. 3. Understand the effect of varying muscle microstructural features on the shear wave simulation.
