What should I consider when formulating a placement?

In order for an assignment/project to be suitable for a degree project, it must fit the student’s subject profile plus that it provides the opportunity for independent work and an application of theoretical knowledge. Since a practical degree project placement must be at the proper academic level, the posting is considered a proposal that must be discussed and planned together with the student and the academic supervisor who then approves it. A planning report must then be formulated and approved by the company/organisation’s designated supervisor and by the academic supervisor at KTH. It is an agreement between you and KTH.
Different study programmes have different requirements for degree projects. KTH’s academic supervisor can describe the requirements that apply to each relevant programme.
Some common elements of degree projects include literature search, design work, computer programming, computational work and experimental work. The results, which are to be presented in a written report, are usually solutions to problems in the form of i.a. drawings, methodological descriptions, computer software programs or perhaps a measurement method.
Feel free to describe the activities in which the issue is located. With the posting also submit an English translation of the heading or alternatively feel free to write the entire posting in English (to make it easier for our international students in their searching).

What is the best time of the year to post a placement opening?

The Master of Science students in civil engineering start their practical degree project placements in January and this consists of 30 academic credits (one full term). The students are looking for their practical degree project placement primarily from September.
The bachelor's degree students in civil engineering start their practical degree project placements in April and this consists of 15 academic credits (half a term). The students are looking for their practical degree project placement primarily from December.

What is applicable with regard to financial compensation?

Practical degree project placement work and internship are part of the academic studies and therefore there is no requirement nor obligation for financial compensation to be provided. On the other hand however, it is common for the student to receive a form of financial compensation/bonus when the degree project has been completed. It is customary to provide reimbursement for costs related to travel, materials, etc. and to provide a workspace. If you enter into an agreement with the student on an amount of financial compensation, it is an agreement between both of you.

What is applicable with regard to intellectual property rights?

If the participating company/organisation enters into an employment contract with the student, the company/organisation has the rights to any intellectual property rights. In such case, the student is then entitled to fair financial compensation, which should be governed by an agreement between both of you. If the student has proposed or project or own the data for the practical degree project and nothing else has been agreed to, the student owns the intellectual property rights that are developed within the framework of the placement and the related project.
If you have any questions about intellectual property rights, please e-mail innovation@kth.se or otherwise contact us.

What are the applicable procedures with regard to the principle of public access to information?

The practical degree project is presented in the form of a written report that is presented at a seminar that is open to anyone who desires to participate. The report becomes a public document. Often a special presentation will be made for the company.

What is KTH responsible for?

KTH is not responsible for the costs outside KTH in connection with the degree project nor for any personal injury that may occur or any property damage, financial or other damages, that the student may either directly or indirectly cause the company/organisation or that may arise as a result of the degree project.
